One of just 53 hospitals worldwide to achieve this designation this year for quality, safety and a healthy work environment
White Plains, N.Y. (July 24, 2023) – White Plains Hospital announced today it has been selected as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s (ENA) 2023 Lantern Award. The Hospital is one of just seven in New York and 53 in the world to achieve this prestigious three-year designation this year, which recognizes emergency departments, and specifically emergency department nurses, that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.
Lantern Award recipients are chosen following a vigorous application process that includes quantitative measurements focused on patient outcomes as well as specific examples of its commitment to both patient care and staff well-being.
“Operating an efficient Emergency Department requires skilled nurses, constant communication, and a passion to provide the highest quality care for our community in their time of need,” said Ertha Small-Nicolas, MSN, RN, CPEN, Director of Nursing at White Plains Hospital. “This recognition from the ENA is notable because they understand the challenges we face every day and acknowledge the creative solutions we have implemented to enhance the patient experience.”
White Plains Hospital has the busiest Emergency Department in Westchester County, with nearly 75,000 patient visits annually. One example of recent innovation is a multi-year redesign, which reduced our average ‘door-to-provider time’ from 22 minutes to just 10 minutes.
“As a three-time Magnet-designated organization, we are proud of the strong and collaborative nursing culture we have built at White Plains Hospital, and we are especially pleased to be honored by the ENA for our work in emergency medicine,” said Leigh Anne McMahon, DNP, MHA, RN, NEA-BC, Executive Vice President, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer at White Plains Hospital.
