White Plains Hospital Receives Prestigious Stroke Center Accreditation

WHITE PLAINS, NY (May 15, 2019) – White Plains Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers. The Gold Seal of Approval®and the Heart-Check mark represent symbols of quality from their respective organizations. 

“We are the first in Westchester to receive this designation,” said Michael Palumbo, MD, EVP and Chief Medical Officer at White Plains Hospital. “We recognize the significant risk of stroke and cerebrovascular disease in our community, and this accreditation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting our community’s needs and highlights the dedication of our staff in providing exceptional care every day.”

Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers is awarded for a two-year period to Joint Commission-accredited acute care hospitals.

White Plains Hospital is the first New York State-designated Regional Stroke Center in Westchester County, and its expert Stroke Team has been consistently recognized for caring for stroke patients with the right treatments in a rapid timeframe. The hospital has expanded services and a growing team of highly experienced specialists in vascular neurology to diagnose patients who have suffered a stroke and provide them with the most advanced treatment for optimal outcomes.

Stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
