White Plains Hospital Is the Only Hospital in Westchester to Earn an “A” Rating for Patient Safety From Leapfrog Group

December 15, 2020

WHITE PLAINS, NY – White Plains Hospital has once again earned an “A” from healthcare watchdog the Leapfrog Group in its Fall 2020 Hospital Safety Grades for its excellence in providing safe and expert care to its patients. The Hospital remains the only healthcare facility in Westchester County to receive the highest possible rating. White Plains Hospital had previously been given an “A” rating in the spring of 2020, as well as in the 2019 spring and fall ratings, and is one of only 105 hospitals in the United States to earn the designation as a Top Hospital by the Leapfrog Group.  Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the Top Hospital award and White Plains Hospital was one of 29 to be named a Top General Hospital.

“Consistently achieving an ‘A’ for patient safety, year after year, day after day, is an extraordinary accomplishment and we congratulate the clinicians, staff, volunteers, and leadership of White Plains Hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We applaud White Plains Hospital for protecting the lives and safety of patients and healthcare workers. Given the immense challenges confronting the American healthcare system as it battles the COVID-19 pandemic, we need all hospitals to demonstrate such relentless dedication to their patients.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is considered the gold standard measure of patient safety. It uses performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. The Safety Grade assigns letter grades of ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ and ‘F’ to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harmful situations. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Safety Grade uses as many as 27 measures of hospital safety data to assign grades.

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in its category.
