White Plains Hospital Introduces GammaTile® Therapy to Enhance Brain Tumor Treatment Options

August 6, 2025

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (August 6, 2025) – White Plains Hospital announced today its adoption of GammaTile®, an innovative treatment for patients with operable brain tumors. This cutting-edge treatment provides a single-procedure solution for tumor removal surgery and radiation therapy, thereby ensuring patients receive immediate, highly targeted treatment.

Approved by the FDA, each GammaTile has radiation sources embedded in a collagen tile that delivers a precise dose of radiation directly where it is needed. The GammaTile is placed inside the surgical cavity at the time of tumor removal, targets remaining cancer cells when they are at their lowest levels, reducing their risk of recurrence.

Unlike traditional external beam radiation therapies, which require a two- to six-week treatment delay for surgical healing – and pass radiation through healthy brain tissues – GammaTile minimizes exposure to healthy tissue, reducing the potential damage and side effects associated with traditional radiation treatments. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the collagen tile.

“Adopting GammaTile further reflects our ongoing commitment to providing patients with cutting-edge treatments that improve care and outcomes,” said Dr. Randy Stevens, Director of Radiation Oncology at White Plains Hospital. “This advanced technology offers new hope for patients dealing with the treatment challenges involved with brain tumors.”

GammaTile has shown promise in treating such brain tumors as glioblastomas – the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumors in adults – brain metastases, and recurrent meningiomas.

While clinical trials are ongoing to evaluate the potential use of GammaTile in other areas, it currently is indicated only to treat newly diagnosed malignant brain tumors and recurrent brain tumors.
