White Plains Hospital and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital Offer Massage Services for Cancer Patients and Their Families

September 11, 2018

WHITE PLAINS, NY – September 11, 2017 – White Plains Hospital (WPH) has partnered with Burke Rehabilitation Hospital (Burke) to offer expert massage services to cancer patients, their families, and caregivers at the WPH Center for Cancer Care at 2 Longview Avenue. WPH and Burke are members of Montefiore Health System and anticipate that this will be the first of many collaborative efforts by these two healthcare leaders.

Patients with a cancer diagnosis can benefit from accessibility to massage therapists with expertise in oncology massage and other specialty massage services. They may also find it convenient to access massage services at the same location as physician office visits and treatment. Massage may alleviate chronic pain and improve range of motion in injured, weak, or tight muscles; improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin; reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety; enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow; improve circulation; and reduce post-surgery adhesions and swelling.

The types of massage offered include general, or Swedish, massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration, and tapping to help relax and energize you. Oncology massage helps manage both the symptoms of cancer and the side effects of its treatments, such as pain, anxiety, nausea, fatigue, depression, reduced range of motion, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Meditative massage is a slow flowing, gentle massage with or without aromatherapy. This massage is often combined with guided imagery and positive affirmations, and uses soothing music and narrative to evoke multisensory memory and enhance positive thinking.

Massage services are offered in a safe, non-judgmental environment, which ensures complete confidentiality, allowing the patient to feel comfortable and secure. Prices begin at $50 for 30 minutes with packages offered at 10% discounts.

In announcing this partnership, Jeffrey Menkes, President and CEO of Burke said, “We are excited about this new association between Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and White Plains Hospital, our neighbor and fellow Montefiore Health System member. This type of collaboration allows both hospitals to offer expanded services, helping make our community stronger. We look forward to more joint ventures in the future.”

Dr. Michael Palumbo, Medical Director and Executive Vice President of WPH said, “This service provides a tremendous opportunity for our patients and their caregivers to experience the therapeutic power of massage when they come for their treatment at the Center for Cancer Care. We are grateful for this association with Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and we anticipate increasing cooperative efforts between our two hospitals.”
