Mark Burshteyn, MD, Joins White Plains Hospital's Center for Cancer Care as Director of Interventional Oncology
New Appointment Represents Hospital's Expansion of Cancer Care Services
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (March 1, 2018)— Continuing its commitment to making advanced cancer care available close to home for Westchester residents, White Plains Hospital has announced the appointment of Mark Burshteyn, MD, as Director of Interventional Oncology. An enhanced service at the Hospital, interventional oncology is a subspecialty of interventional radiology that uses image guidance and minimally invasive procedures including embolization and ablation to treat and cure many types of cancer by shrinking and destroying tumors. It is the fastest growing area in interventional radiology and has been recognized as another pillar of oncologic care, together with radiation oncology, medical oncology, and surgical oncology. Benefits of interventional oncologic techniques include minimal incisions, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and reduced morbidity.
In addition to minimally invasive cancer treatments, Dr. Burshteyn and his clinical team will play a vital role in the diagnosis, complication management, and palliative care of cancer patients through techniques such as long-term intravenous access, including port and PICC insertion, drainage and pain management procedures.
"We were the first hospital in Westchester to build a stand-alone cancer center more than twenty years ago, and this appointment is another example of how we are continuing to expand our programs, services, and facilities to meet the growing demand for advanced care, right here in the community," says Dr. Michael Palumbo, Executive Vice President and Medical Director at White Plains Hospital.
Dr. Burshteyn is board certified in Diagnostic and Vascular and Interventional Radiology. He received his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and completed a fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He was most recently an attending physician in vascular and interventional radiology at Temple University Hospital, Jeanes Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Dr. Burshteyn is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology and the American College of Radiology. In addition, he has co-authored a number of articles which have appeared in professional journals such as the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and the Journal of the American College of Radiology; and has presented case reports and studies at a number of national and local professional gatherings.
Dr. Burshteyn will see patients at the White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care at 2 Longview Avenue. His office can be reached by phone at (914) 849-3994.
