Continuing its growth of advanced cancer care services for Westchester residents, White Plains Hospital has announced the appointment of Jonathan Schwartz, MD, as Director of Clinical Hepatology. A new service at the Hospital, hepatology is a specialty of medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the liver, gallbladder and biliary tree.
In response to a growing number of patients with liver disease and liver cancer, White Plains Hospital recently assembled a team to create a new, multidisciplinary hepatobiliary program. In addition to Dr. Schwartz, the team consists of hepatobiliary surgeon Dr. Sasan Roayaie, who has extensive experience in complex liver, bile duct, and pancreas surgery; and Dr. Mark Burshteyn, who joined the Hospital last month as Director of Interventional Oncology, a subspecialty of Interventional Radiology that uses image guidance and minimally invasive procedures to treat and cure many types of cancer by shrinking and destroying tumors.
With Dr. Schwartz, the Hospital gains a board-certified hepatologist trained in treating patients with acute and chronic liver diseases, including those with advanced liver diseases who require liver transplantation. Such patients will be able to see Dr. Schwartz at White Plains Hospital for pre and post-surgical care. Dr. Schwartz is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
He received his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Schwartz then completed a fellowship Gastroenterology and Hepatology and an additional year of training in Transplant and General Hepatology, both at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is board-certified in Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology. He is also an accomplished researcher, having published extensively in medical journals and presented at numerous national and international meetings. He is also a member of several professional societies dedicated to the research and treatment of liver disease.
