Honoring 25 years of patient service in the field of surgical oncology, Dr. Mark Gordon of the White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care and Chairman of the White Plains Hospital Cancer Committee, will be the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s prestigious Beacon of Hope Award. “This award is presented annually to an individual or business in the region who has demonstrated an unyielding commitment to the fight against cancer,” according to Jackie Walsh, Senior Development Manager for the Society. “Dr. Gordon’s leadership, passion and dedication for twenty-five years has helped inspire hope for hundreds of cancer patients in and around Westchester County.”

“Dr. Gordon is a highly skilled surgeon who demonstrates kindness and compassion to everyone he meets. When he is caring for you, he makes you feel like you are the most important person in the world,” said Una Hopkins, Administrative Director of the Cancer Program at White Plains Hospital. “He is a leader among his peers, admired by those who work with him in and out of the OR and highly recommended to others by his patients; the highest recommendation any medical professional can achieve.”

Diamond Gala Supports Cancer Patient Programs
For twenty-five years, the Diamond Gala has supported patient services and programs aimed to reduce the pain and suffering of cancer. Additionally, through the efforts of the volunteer committee and generous donors in the Westchester community, over $300,000 has been raised through a special mission fundraiser at the Diamond Gala to specifically support Hope Lodge, a Society service that provides free lodging for cancer patients receiving treatment far from home. A patient room at the Society’s NYC Hope Lodge has been named in honor of the Gala committee for its unyielding commitment to provide direct, nurturing care to patients.

About American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society was created more than 100 years ago for one purpose—to liberate the world from the threat of cancer. From prevention to diagnosis, from treatment to recovery, the American Cancer Society is here every step of the way. Thanks in part to our efforts, there has been a 23% decline in the cancer death rate over the past 21 years. That’s 1.7 million deaths prevented.
