If you're in pain, don't hesitate - get to the Emergency Department right away!
When you wake up short of breath, or your child complains of stomach pain, it’s reassuring to know you can go to an emergency department (ED) to take care of the problem. Over 139 million people visit emergency departments in the U.S. alone.White Plains Hospital, known for having the busiest ED in Westchester County, had more than 64,000 visits last year.
Children account for 30 million emergency department visits every year, suffering from fever, abdominal pain, earaches, vomiting and sports injuries, among other afflictions. Seniors have their own set of issues that should be treated immediately, including falls, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and dehydration.
Denial Can Be Deadly
However, because of the coronavirus outbreak, even people with serious illnesses are avoiding or delaying treatment.
Chest pain is the number one cause of trips to the emergency department in the country. The symptoms of a heart attack aren't always obvious, such as trouble swallowing, a sour taste in your mouth, or pain that intensifies when you breathe deeply or cough, so if you are feeling unwell, it is best to get it checked out.
Other reasons to go to the ED include:
- Cuts and bruises
- Skin rashes and infections
- Concussions and head trauma
- Difficulties breathing
- Asthma attacks
- Sprains and Strains
- Broken bones
- Burns
- Abdominal pain
- Lacerations and cuts
Don’t Wait…Get to the ED!
A man in Los Angeles waited five days after symptoms appeared before seeking treatment for what turned out to be appendicitis. By the time he received medical care, his appendix had ruptured and an infection had set in, turning what should have been a routine operation into a life or death situation.
If your condition is serious it is probably best to not try and drive yourself to the ED. Call 9-1-1 if you’re dizzy, too sick or have difficulty getting in or out of your car. Not only is calling an ambulance safe, it can give paramedics a chance to start treatment right away.
Remember, you know your body best. If you think there may be an issue, get it checked out. We are here and ready to help you.
