Crain’s New York Business | White Plains Hospital Earns Top Marks for Patient Safety

November 20, 2025

The below are excerpts from an article first published in the November 13, 2025 issue of Crain’s New York Business.

White Plains Hospital received a top “A” grade for safety in the latest report by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit The Leapfrog Group.

Just over 23% of New York hospitals–33 of 143–earned top scores for patient safety, proving their adequate critical care staffing, fall prevention and infection control. The rankings focus exclusively on how safe hospitals are for patients, aiming to help individuals choose a medical facility based on its rates of preventable injuries and infections.

New York hospitals have gradually improved their patient safety grades in recent years.

Only 12% of hospitals statewide received “A” grades in the spring of 2024, as hospitals struggled to ramp up staffing and improve infection control in the years following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Though the number of A-rated hospitals has nearly doubled since then, New York still has a much smaller percentage than other states, such as New Jersey, where more than half the hospitals earned top patient safety grades, Leapfrog data shows.
