Breaking New Ground: White Plains Hospital’s Expansion Takes Off

Literally—and figuratively—White Plains Hospital is breaking new ground within the region’s healthcare landscape. Its largest-ever campus transformation will nearly double the Hospital’s size when it opens in 2028 and provide the Hudson Valley with care that cements White Plains Hospital’s reputation as the region’s premier hospital provider. As the project progresses, we will continue to keep our community up to date on the latest developments.

Shovels Up!

At the official groundbreaking ceremony on May 5, 2025, leaders from the Hospital were joined by Montefiore Medicine President and CEO Dr. Philip Ozuah, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, and White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, as well as many community supporters. White Plains Hospital CEO Susan Fox explained what’s driving the Hospital’s dramatic expansion: “The Hospital’s inpatient volume has grown by 50%, Emergency Department volume by 80%, and operating room volume by more than 80%.” “The White Plains Hospital Emergency Department is crowded because the people of Westchester County are smart. They’re coming to a CMS five-star hospital, a Leapfrog A-grade hospital,” added Dr. Ozuah, touting the Hospital’s award-winning credentials from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade.

Changing the Skyline

"Together with our partners from Montefiore, we have changed healthcare in Westchester and the Hudson Valley— and today we are changing the skyline along East Post Road,” said Fox of the 10-story, approximately 500,000-square-foot Expansion. The project is being designed by architectural firm Payette, while Suffolk Construction is serving as the construction manager. The project, which will cost an estimated $750 million, will be financed through a combination of a $500 million Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) bond, philanthropy, and equity from operating expenses.

Features of the new White Plains Hospital Expansion, which will connect with the existing Hospital on the Emergency Department, main floor and Operating Room levels, include:

  • 240 additional single-bedded inpatient rooms, 144 of which will open in 2028, increasing the Hospital’s total number of licensed inpatient beds from 292 to 436.
  • A dedicated operating room (OR) floor with space for 10 additional state-of the-art ORs equipped with the latest technology to support the increasingly complex care the Hospital provides.
  • A new Emergency Department (ED) that will more than double the size of current ED space; featuring a vast driveway for drop-offs and entering the facility, as well as expanded ambulance bays. Approximately 90,000 patient visits to the new ED are expected by late 2025, making it the busiest in the county.
