Advancing Care Through Expansion

Building and Maintaining the Hospital for the Future

Increasingly, more patients in Westchester are choosing White Plains Hospital for care than any other hospital in the county. Meeting that growing demand represents both a challenge and an opportunity—one that the Hospital will meet through an ambitious new construction plan that is already underway.

Transformation has been a consistent thread throughout the Hospital’s 131-year history, from a four-room house in 1893 to today’s hub of advanced care for the county and the Hudson Valley. To continue to meet the growing needs of our community, White Plains Hospital is expanding its facilities with a new 10-story, 475,000-square-foot addition that will connect to the hospital on the first three floors, and will have patient rooms on the floors above. Set to open in early 2028, the new expansion will include:

  • 100% private inpatient rooms
    • Adding 144 modern private beds
    • Comfortable space for caregivers

  • Additional state-of-the-art operating suites
    • Designed to support the growing complexity of surgical cases

  • An expanded Emergency Department
    • With additional 22,650 sq. ft. of space

We sat down with White Plains Hospital President and CEO Susan Fox to learn more about this exciting new undertaking.

This new expansion is exciting. Can you please tell us what impact you expect it to have on our community?

We have known for a while that we need more space as we continue to grow and expand our programs and services. To put it in perspective, since 2010 our inpatient volume has grown nearly 50%; our Emergency Department, which is already the busiest in Westchester, has seen volume rise 61%; and our surgical volume has more than doubled, with more and more patients seeking our Hospital for care each year.

This new expansion will help to alleviate these capacity constraints. When open in early 2028, the project will more than double the size of our Emergency Department, allowing us to care for more patients faster. In addition, it will enable us to offer more private rooms with the addition of 144 new beds. Further, it will allow us to create additional modern operating rooms to handle the growing complexity of cases we are seeing as we continue to provide more advanced services and procedures.

The Hospital’s growth has certainly been impressive over the past several years. What do you attribute it to?

There are many reasons we believe patients have made White Plains Hospital their hospital of choice. First, our patients know that when they come here, they are getting the highest quality care. We are proud to be the only hospital in the Hudson Valley to receive five stars from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest quality rating awarded, for three consecutive years, while also providing an exceptional patient experience.

Additionally, we have worked hard to bring advanced programs and top specialists to White Plains Hospital so our patients no longer need to travel far for specialized care. Together with Montefiore Einstein, we share in a unique vision to bring new and specialized procedures to local communities, and we have successfully partnered to bring an array of complex programs including cardiac surgery and structural heart, neurosciences, and cutting-edge cancer treatments to our Hospital.

White Plains Hospital has been expanding its presence for a while. Is this the final piece?

Our goal has always been to provide our community with the right care, at the right place, at the right time. For example, over the past decade, we have focused on enhancing access to preventative and advanced healthcare services via an ambulatory network of providers, White Plains Physician Associates and Scarsdale Medical Group, which has physicians, nurse practitioners, and advanced practice providers in nearly three dozen locations throughout Westchester County.

Also, to continue to provide our patients with modernized facilities, we have added or renovated almost one million square feet of space for inpatient and outpatient care over the last 10 years. This includes our Center for Cancer Care, Family Health Center, and the Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery (CAMS), which opened in 2021, among others. CAMS is home to operating rooms, procedural suites, advanced imaging, and specialty physician practices, including orthopedics; urology; pain management; ear, nose and throat; thyroid; colorectal; plastic and reconstructive; and wound care with hyperbaric oxygen chambers.

We are also currently constructing a new outpatient facility, located at 750 White Plains Road in Scarsdale, that will open in 2025 and feature several specialty physician practices.

While our new expansion will certainly be our crown jewel, we will always look for new opportunities to continue to elevate the care we provide. We are honored to care for our community.
